1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Joseph Wetzler, Director of Operations for TPG Sports Group. Our company is a sports event management company that organized and operates multiple events throughout the year. All events are platforms for individuals to grow their career or business in the sports & entertainment industry.
2. Where are you from?
I am originally from Oakland, NJ. After I graduated college, I moved to Charlotte, NC to work at TPG Sports Group.
3. What gets you up in the morning?
Every day is a fresh start. No matter how good or bad my previous day was, I know that this is a new opportunity to have a successful day.
4.What’s been keeping you busy lately?
Mainly, our Pro Scout School event has been keeping me busy. Pro Scout School is a conference for anyone looking to learn from and network with some of the best minds in basketball. We bring in NBA General Managers, Coaches, Scouts, Player Personnel Directors, etc to educate the next generation on what it takes to succeed on the basketball operations side of the business. Also, our Sports Tank event, which is a sports pitch event held in Charlotte, NC. We bring in sports startup companies from around the world to pitch their companies to investors and sports industry executives in hopes of securing deals with both. We’ve also recently launched an executive leadership retreat with NBA Hall of Famer, Jerry West, and longtime Nike & NBA executive, Rich Sheubrooks. We have a lot keeping us busy at TPG Sports Group right now.
5. What’s your favourite aspect of what you do?
The rewarding feeling that comes after each event. Knowing that our company put on a great event that helped someone take a step forward in achieving their dream is the best part about this job.When someone who attended our event thanks me for putting the event together makes all the hard work and long hours worth it.
6. What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy playing basketball, watching movies, and reading.
7. Who is your biggest inspiration?
There are a lot of people who I look to for inspiration and I think learning about what made each of them successful and taking a little bit from each person is important. Creative minds like Steve Jobs, Phil Knight, and others fascinate me. I have tremendous mentors in my life including my parents and my TPG family.
8. What brand or ad campaign did you wish you’d worked on and why?
The Apple Macintosh commercial during the 1984 Super Bowl. It was such a revolutionary advertisement that allowed viewers to make their own interpretations. It was a crucial time for Apple to separate themselves from other computer brands and the ad creators came up with one of the most famous commercials of all time.
9. What have you been getting up to with Openr, and what’s worked best for you? (or how are you planning on using Openr, if you’re just starting out?)
Openr is great for our newsletters. We love sharing content from other sports industry experts in those messages. Our main goal is to get people looking at our events and Openr allows us to redirect individuals to our website while they take a look at the information we are sharing.
10. When it comes to marketing and social media what’s your one tip for the rest of the Openr tribe to get results?
Put out great content that is worth sharing and also share great content from other sources. The great thing about Openr is that you can always redirect eyeballs back to your website when you share content from somewhere else.
